Fading and soiling look similar and are not the same thing

A lounge that sits in a sunny window ends up looking tired, and people usually assume it needs cleaning. Sometimes that is exactly right. Sometimes cleaning cannot touch it. The two processes happen side by side, which is why the difference is worth understanding before you spend money.

Fading is UV light breaking the dye molecules in the fibre apart. The colour is not covered over — it is gone, chemically destroyed. Nothing brings it back, because there is nothing left to remove or restore. On a sofa this shows as one arm or one cushion being lighter than the rest, and it follows the shape of the light rather than the shape of use.

Photo-soiling is different and far more encouraging. Sunlight warms the fabric, warm fabric attracts and holds airborne dust and oily film more readily, and UV also drives a slow oxidation of the oils already in the fibre so they darken. That produces a dull yellowed-looking cast across the sun-exposed area — and all of it is removable, because it is material sitting in the fabric rather than damage to the fabric.

The practical upshot: a sun-facing sofa is often carrying both, and the part people assume is ruined is frequently the part that comes out. It is common for a cleaned lounge to look dramatically better while a genuine fade line stays exactly where it was.

Telling them apart before you book

Four checks you can do in about two minutes.

💡 Look under a cushion

The protected underside is the original colour. If the exposed face is lighter, that is fade. If it is darker or duller, that is soil — and soil comes out.

📏 Follow the shape

Fade follows the light: a hard edge where a curtain or a wall shadow fell. Soiling follows use and airflow, with soft, gradual edges.

🎨 Lighter or duller?

Lighter and washed-out means the dye has gone. Duller, greyer or slightly yellowed with the colour still underneath means film sitting on top.

🪛 Check the back

The rear of the sofa rarely gets sun. Compare it to the front for the clearest read you will get without moving anything.

What we will tell you on the day. Before quoting we look at exactly this, and if the answer is that most of what you are seeing is fade, we will say so rather than take a booking that cannot deliver what you are hoping for. Where it is both, we will tell you roughly how much of the difference is likely to come back.

Slowing it down from here

Fade cannot be reversed, but it can be stopped from getting worse, and the fixes are ordinary. A sheer curtain across the window cuts a useful share of UV while still letting the light in — which is what sheers are actually for, beyond privacy. Rotating and swapping seat cushions every few months spreads the exposure so no single cushion carries it all. Angling the lounge so the same arm is not permanently in the beam helps. And on a west-facing window, closing the blind for the worst two hours of a summer afternoon does more than anything else on this list.

Curtains take the worst of it

The curtain is the thing standing between the sun and everything else, so it absorbs the UV load on the room’s behalf. Over years that weakens the fibres in the window-facing panel, and a weakened curtain can be fragile along the leading edge and the hem. We check the condition before starting and tell you if anything looks fragile, rather than discovering it midway.

Cleaning will not undo fading in a curtain either — but the dust and dullness sitting on top of the fade absolutely does come off, and on an old curtain that difference is usually much bigger than people expect. We clean them in place on the rod, including sheers, blockouts, lined drapes, Roman blinds and the pelmet.

Do not put lined or blockout curtains in the washing machine. The lining and the face fabric shrink at different rates, so the panel comes out puckered along the seams and hanging short, and it never sits straight again. On sun-weakened fabric the drum can tear the panel outright.

Priced by the seat

🛋Sofas & modulars

$40 a seat. Count seat cushions, not pieces. Cushions cleaned both faces, plus arms, back and the deck underneath.

🛏Armchairs, recliners & sofa beds

Priced as a seat, no mechanism surcharge. Recliners open out fully so the footrest cavity gets done.

🛌Mattresses & bedheads

Mattresses steam cleaned with anti-dust-mite treatment, dry enough to sleep on tonight. Bedheads $70 each, cleaned in place.

Check the fabric code before anyone puts water on it. Look for a W, S, WS or X tag under a cushion or on the frame. S means solvent only — water on an S-coded fabric can leave a permanent ring even after it dries. We read the code first, and test a hidden section if the tag is missing.

What’s included

✓ Fade versus soil assessed before we quote
✓ Dry pass first on every surface
✓ Fabric code checked, or tested if missing
✓ Cushions cleaned both faces
✓ Curtains, Romans and pelmets done on the rod
✓ Mattress steam clean with dust-mite treatment
Everything applied has to come back out. Upholstery is fabric over foam, and foam holds water — too much moisture wicks back to the surface as a ring days later. We keep the moisture low during the clean, and before we leave we will tell you which windows and fans will get things dry fastest.

Dingley Village upholstery cleaning — FAQs

Can cleaning fix a sun-faded sofa?

No, and it is worth being clear about that. Fading is UV light breaking the dye molecules apart, so the colour is chemically destroyed rather than covered over – there is nothing left to remove or restore. What cleaning does fix is the other thing sun causes, which is a dull yellowed cast from dust and oxidised oils held in warm fabric. That part comes out completely.

How do I tell fading from soiling?

Lift a cushion and compare the protected underside to the exposed face. Lighter and washed-out on top means fade. Darker, duller or slightly yellowed with the colour still underneath means soil, and soil comes out. Fade also follows the shape of the light with a hard edge where a curtain or wall shadow fell, while soiling has soft gradual edges.

My sofa is in a sunny window and looks tired. Is cleaning worth it?

Usually yes, because a sun-facing lounge is generally carrying both problems and the part people assume is ruined is often the part that comes out. It is common for a cleaned sofa to look dramatically better while a genuine fade line stays exactly where it was. We assess which is which before quoting and tell you roughly how much of the difference will come back.

How do I stop it getting worse?

A sheer curtain cuts a useful share of UV while still letting light in, which is what sheers are for beyond privacy. Rotate and swap seat cushions every few months so no single one takes all the exposure. Angle the lounge so the same arm is not permanently in the beam. And on a west-facing window, closing the blind for the worst two hours of a summer afternoon does more than anything else.

Can you clean old sun-affected curtains?

Yes, in place on the rod along with the pelmet. The caveat is that years of UV weaken the fibres in the window-facing panel, so the leading edge and hem can be fragile – we check that before starting rather than finding out midway. Cleaning will not undo the fading, but the dust and dullness sitting on top of it comes off, and that difference is usually far bigger than people expect.

How much does upholstery cleaning cost in Dingley Village?

From $40 a seat, quoted upfront – count the seat cushions rather than the pieces. Bedheads are $70 each. There is no premium for fabric type and no surcharge for recliners or sofa beds, and no travel surcharge between Dingley Village, Springvale South, Keysborough, Mordialloc, Clayton South, Braeside and Heatherton.

What is the W, S, WS or X code on my sofa?

It is the manufacturer cleaning code, usually on a tag under a cushion or on the frame. W means water-based cleaning is safe, S means solvent only, WS means either, and X means suction only. S is the one that matters most – water on an S-coded fabric can leave a permanent ring even after it dries. We check the code before anything is applied and test a hidden section if the tag is missing.
