What actually builds up in a mattress

A sleeping adult loses moisture continuously through breath and skin — commonly cited at around half a litre across a night, more in summer. Most of that goes into the air, but a meaningful share goes straight down into the bedding and the mattress under it. Add the skin cells everybody sheds constantly, and the body oils that soak through a sheet the way they soak through a pillowcase.

That combination — warmth, moisture and shed skin — is the exact set of conditions dust mites need. They are microscopic, they are in essentially every home, and they concentrate in the top few centimetres of a mattress because that is where the food and humidity are. What triggers people is not the mite itself but the protein in its waste, which becomes airborne dust. And you spend seven or eight hours a night with your face directly above it.

None of that is alarming on its own; it is just the normal consequence of using a bed. The point is only that a mattress cannot be washed, rarely gets turned any more, and in most houses has never been cleaned at all, so nothing ever removes any of it.

What people ask about their mattress

The four we get most often.

🟡 The yellowish patches

Usually oxidised sweat and body oil rather than mould. They darken with age and air exposure, and while they lighten considerably, very old ones may not clear entirely.

🛏 “I have a protector”

Good — it catches liquid and a lot of the skin cells. It does not stop the moisture in your breath, and anything that got in before you fitted it is still in there.

🌅 Sunning it out the back

Helps a little with surface dampness, but the mite population lives centimetres down where sun and airflow never reach.

💧 Will it be soaked?

No. Controlled moisture and strong extraction — you sleep on it that night. Foam holds water, so over-wetting a mattress is the one mistake that actually matters.

How we clean a mattress

A thorough dry pass first to lift the loose dust and skin cells, since wetting them just turns them to paste. Then targeted treatment of any staining, a hot steam clean over the whole surface and the sides, and an anti-dust-mite treatment. Strong extraction pulls the moisture back out so the mattress is dry and back in use the same night. Strip the bed before we arrive and it is a fast job — most bedrooms are done inside half an hour.

Worth doing on the same visit. Dust-mite allergens are not confined to the bed. The two other reservoirs in a bedroom are the carpet and the curtains, and cleaning one of the three while leaving the others is a short-lived result. One call-out covers all of it.

Curtains, cleaned where they hang

Curtains in newer Clyde homes collect more than people expect: fine dust from the estate, whatever comes through open windows, and winter condensation that dampens the bottom of a sheer against the glass and makes dust cling to the hem. Taking them down and rehanging them is most of a day with a ladder, so we clean them in place instead — sheers, blockouts, lined drapes, Roman blinds and the pelmet above them.

Do not put lined or blockout curtains in the washing machine. The lining and the face fabric are different materials and shrink at different rates, so the panel comes out puckered along the seams and hanging short — and it never sits straight again. On blockouts the drum also cracks the coated backing, which then flakes and lets light through in pinholes. It is the most common way a good set of curtains gets ruined by someone trying to look after them.

The couch, priced by the seat

Lift a seat cushion and look at the fabric underneath. That strip has been shielded from oils, dust and light, so it is the colour the lounge actually is. The gap between that and the rest is soil rather than wear — and soil comes out.

🛋Sofas & modulars

$40 a seat. Count seat cushions, not pieces. Cushions cleaned both faces, plus arms, back and frame.

🛏Armchairs, recliners & sofa beds

Priced as a seat, no mechanism surcharge. Recliners open out and sofa beds fold out so the inside gets done — tell us so we allow the time.

🍽Dining chairs

Fabric seats, upholstered backs and the top rail where hands rest. A set of six is quick.

Check the fabric code before anyone puts water on it. Look for a W, S, WS or X tag under a cushion or on the frame. S means solvent only — water on an S-coded fabric can leave a permanent ring even after it dries, and plenty of ordinary-looking lounges are S-coded. We read the code first, and test a hidden section if the tag is missing.

Clyde mattress & upholstery cleaning — FAQs

Does a mattress really need cleaning?

It is the one item in the house that gets the heaviest use and the least attention. A sleeping adult loses moisture through breath and skin all night – commonly put at around half a litre – and sheds skin cells continuously, and a share of both ends up in the mattress. It cannot be washed, it rarely gets turned, and in most homes it has never been cleaned, so nothing ever removes any of it.

What are the yellow patches on my mattress?

Usually oxidised sweat and body oil rather than mould. They darken as they age and are exposed to air. They lighten considerably with cleaning, but very old ones may not clear entirely – we will tell you which yours looks like before we start.

I use a mattress protector. Is that enough?

It helps a lot – it catches liquid and much of the skin cell load. What it does not stop is the moisture in your breath, and it does nothing about whatever went in before you fitted it. A protector plus an occasional clean is the sensible combination.

Can I sleep on it the same night?

Yes. We use controlled moisture and strong extraction, so the mattress is dry and back in use that night. Over-wetting is the one real mistake with mattresses, because the foam underneath holds water – which is exactly why we keep the moisture low and pull it back out.

Do you have to take the curtains down?

No. Sheers, blockouts, lined drapes and Roman blinds are cleaned in place on the track, along with the pelmet above them. Nothing gets unhooked or re-threaded. Home washing is the thing to avoid on lined or blockout panels – the lining and face fabric shrink at different rates and the curtain ends up puckered and hanging short.

How much does upholstery cleaning cost in Clyde?

From $40 a seat, quoted upfront. Count the seat cushions rather than the pieces. There is no premium for textured fabric and no surcharge for recliners or sofa beds – just tell us so we allow the time.

Can you do the mattresses, lounge and curtains in one visit?

Yes, and it is both cheaper and more effective, since dust-mite allergens sit in the bed, the carpet and the curtains alike – cleaning one and leaving the others is a short-lived result. We cover Clyde, Clyde North, Cranbourne East, Cranbourne, Botanic Ridge and Berwick at the same rates, with no travel surcharge.
