The dust a new house comes with
Carpet goes down near the end of a build, but not at the very end. After it is laid there is still cornice work, painting, skirting installation, cabinetry fit-off, tiling and cleaning — and every one of those trades produces fine dust: plaster, render, sanded paint, timber, tile cut-off. It settles on the new carpet and then gets walked into it by everyone finishing the job.
The builder’s clean at handover is a surface clean. It vacuums the top of the pile and makes the house presentable, which is what it is meant to do. What it does not do is extract fine dust that has already worked its way down to the base of the fibre, because that needs the same thing sand needs — slow, deep, deliberate extraction rather than a quick pass.
So a brand-new carpet in a brand-new home is often carrying a meaningful load of construction dust from day one. It does not look dirty, because the dust is pale and evenly distributed.
