Why sand is the worst thing that gets walked into a carpet
Ordinary household dust is light and irregular, so a good vacuum lifts most of it off the surface. Sand is neither. It is dense, and it is made of hard mineral grains — which changes what it does once it is inside a carpet.
Because it is heavy, it does not sit near the top where suction can grab it. Vibration from footsteps shakes it steadily downward through the pile, and within a couple of days most of it is sitting on the backing at the very base of the fibre. That is the one place a vacuum has almost no effect, because airflow through a dense pile drops off sharply with depth.
And because the grains are hard and angular, every single footstep presses the fibre down onto them and drags slightly. Each pass is a tiny scrape along the side of the fibre. Do that thousands of times and the fibre surface is covered in fine scratches, so it scatters light instead of reflecting it — which reads as dull, greyish carpet that never looks properly clean no matter what you do to it.
That is the part worth understanding: sand does its damage silently and permanently, and the damage is not the stain, it is the wear. A carpet in a bayside suburb can be perfectly clean and still look flat, simply because the fibre has been sanded down.

Empty the bag or canister at about half full, because suction drops well before it looks full, and do the hallway and back-door path roughly twice as often as the bedrooms.
