Why the media room gets away with it

A media-room recliner has three areas that a normal armchair does not: the headrest where hair and skin oil concentrate, the gap where the seat meets the back that collects crumbs and coins, and the footrest cavity that is only reachable with the chair opened out. Why does my theatre room smell even though it looks clean?
Because the smell is in the fabric, not the air. Snack oils and skin oils build a slightly sticky film on the recliners and the blockout curtain, and that film holds the odour. Open the door and the air clears, then it returns within an hour because the source never left – which is also why sprays and plug-ins only add a second smell on top.
Why did nobody notice the furniture was dirty?

Can you clean the blockout curtains without taking them down?
Yes – blockouts, sheers, lined drapes, Roman blinds and the pelmet are all cleaned in place on the track. Never machine-wash a blockout: the drum cracks the coated backing so light comes through in pinholes, which on a theatre room curtain defeats the whole point of it, and the lining and face fabric shrink at different rates so the panel hangs short afterwards.
There are spills on the dark fabric I cannot see. Does that matter?
Yes, and it is a good reason to book. A soft drink spill disappears visually on charcoal fabric but leaves sugar in the fibre. That oxidises, goes sticky and then attracts more soil to the same spot, so the patch quietly becomes the dirtiest part of the cushion while looking identical to the rest.
How long does it take to dry in a room with no window?
Usually 2 to 4 hours, extending to 6 to 8 or longer in cold or humid conditions, and a sealed media room is at the slower end. Before we leave we will tell you what will get it dry fastest – normally propping the door open and running the ceiling fan in the adjoining room.
