Cooking does not just make smells. It makes a film.
Frying, searing, grilling and anything with oil in a hot pan does something people rarely think about: it turns a small amount of that fat into droplets fine enough to float. They are far too small to see, they do not settle quickly, and in an open-plan house they drift out of the kitchen and across the entire living area before they land.
Where they land is the problem. Warm air rises, cools against the ceiling and falls back down at the outside walls — which is precisely where the curtains are. So the greasy fraction settles on vertical soft surfaces: curtain panels, the back and shoulders of the sofa, the top rail of the dining chairs.
Ordinary dust would vacuum straight off. This does not, because it is sticky. Once a thin oily layer is on the fabric, every bit of airborne dust that touches it stays there instead of falling loose. Now the dust is glued in place, and the film thickens month by month. That is why the curtain nearest the kitchen goes dark at the top first, and why a brush attachment makes almost no difference.
It also explains the smell. Cooking odour does not live in the air of the room — it lives in that film on the fabric. Open the windows and the air clears; an hour later the smell is back, because the source never left. Sprays and plug-ins add a scent on top of it. Nothing removes it except cleaning the fabric that is holding it.
Where to look for it
Four places it shows up first, in roughly this order.
Darker along the top third than the bottom, because that is where the warm air reaches the fabric. Feels slightly tacky rather than dusty.
Upward and outward-facing fabric collects it while the seat cushions look fine. The back of the lounge is usually dirtier than the part you sit on.
Double dose — airborne film plus skin oil from hands on the top rail. Six chairs is a small job and the most visible change in the house.
A horizontal shelf at ceiling height in the warmest layer of air. Clean the curtains and skip this and it reloads them.
Why it needs more than steam
Oil and water do not mix, which is the whole difficulty. Moisture alone runs off a greasy film without lifting it, so a light steam pass can leave the fabric damp and the film intact. Releasing it takes a cleaning agent that breaks the oil’s grip on the fibre first, a short dwell time to let it work, and then enough suction to flush the loosened film and its trapped dust back out. Skip any of those three and you get a fabric that looks slightly better and smells the same by the weekend.

Why do my curtains smell like cooking even after airing the house?
Because the odour is not in the air, it is in a film on the fabric. Cooking with oil in a hot pan turns some of that fat into droplets fine enough to float, and they settle on vertical soft surfaces like curtains and sofa backs. The film is sticky, so it holds the smell and traps dust. Opening windows clears the air, then the smell returns from the source, which is still hanging at the window.
Why is the top of my curtain darker than the bottom?
Warm air rises, cools against the ceiling and drops back down at the outside walls, which is where the curtains hang. So the greasy fraction of cooking vapour reaches the upper part of the panel first and builds there. On a curtain near an open-plan kitchen the top third usually goes noticeably darker while the hem still looks fine.
Why will not vacuuming or a brush attachment fix it?
Ordinary dust sits loose and lifts with suction. Cooking film does not – it is oily and sticky, so it bonds to the fibre and then glues airborne dust in place on top of it. Suction cannot remove something that is stuck. Releasing it takes a cleaning agent that breaks the oil grip, a short dwell time, then extraction to flush it out.
Is there anything I can do to slow it down?
Run the rangehood for about ten minutes after you finish cooking, not just while the pan is on. Most of the fine airborne droplets are still in the air at that point, and switching the fan off with the stove is exactly when the film starts drifting into the lounge.
Do you need to take the curtains down?
No. Sheers, blockouts, lined drapes and Roman blinds are cleaned in place on the track, along with the pelmet above them. Nothing gets unhooked or re-threaded, and there is no shrinkage risk – unlike home washing, where the lining and the face fabric shrink at different rates and the panel ends up puckered and hanging short.
