Couch, Upholstery & Curtain Cleaning Hallam

📍 Hallam, Doveton & Narre Warren

Pet hair doesn’t sit on a couch. It weaves into it.

Which is why the vacuum takes the top layer off and the sofa still looks furry ten minutes later.

Why upholstery holds hair when carpet lets it go

Vacuum the carpet and the hair comes up. Vacuum the couch and you get maybe half of it, then the nozzle starts skating over the rest. Same machine, same hair — different surface, and there are three reasons.

First, the hair itself. A shaft of animal hair is not smooth; its outer layer is made of overlapping scales, all pointing the same direction, so it behaves a little like a barb. On a woven upholstery fabric it works its way between the threads and then those scales stop it sliding back out. It is anchored, not resting.

Second, static. Fabric over foam, rubbed by a moving vacuum head on a dry day, builds a charge — and fine hair is exactly light enough to be held by it. That is why the hair jumps back onto the fabric the moment you lift the nozzle away.

Third, no airflow underneath. A carpet sits on underlay with a gap around it; a couch cushion is sealed fabric over dense foam, so suction cannot pull air through the material. The vacuum ends up working across the surface instead of into it, which is not enough to release something that is physically hooked into the weave.

What actually gets it out

The order matters more than the equipment.

1. Mechanical release first

The hair has to be lifted out of the weave before it can be collected — that means agitation with a tool that grips, not suction alone.

2. Everything dry, before any water

Wet hair mats and binds to the fabric. Once moisture is applied, whatever hair is still in the weave is far harder to remove and can stay there.

3. The seams and the deck

Hair migrates into piping, seams and the deck under the cushions, which is where the bulk of it ends up. Miss that and it reappears within days.

4. Then the actual cleaning

Dander, skin oil and odour are separate problems to hair, and they only come out properly once the hair is gone.

A trick that genuinely works between cleans. Put on a clean rubber washing-up glove, dampen it very slightly, and drag it across the cushion in one direction. The rubber grips the scales on the hair and rolls it into a clump you can lift off. It outperforms most vacuum attachments on upholstery, costs nothing, and takes about a minute per seat.

Dander and odour are the other half

Hair is the visible problem; dander is the one that affects how the room feels. It is shed skin, far finer than hair, and it settles deep into fabric and foam where nothing disturbs it. That is what most people react to rather than the fur itself — and it is why a couch can look spotless and still make a visiting relative sneeze.

Odour works the same way. Dog smell is body oil transferred into fabric over months, and it is held in the material, not the air — so airing the room clears it for an hour and then it comes back. Both of these need cleaning through the fabric rather than over it, which is what extraction does.

Tell us if there has been a pet accident, and roughly where. Urine that has reached the foam is a genuinely different job from surface odour — it needs treatment right through the cushion rather than a surface clean, and sometimes the honest answer is that a cushion insert is beyond saving. We would rather assess that up front than have you pay for a clean that does not solve it.

The couch, priced by the seat

🛋Sofas & modulars

$40 a seat. Count seat cushions, not pieces. Cushions cleaned both faces, plus arms, back, seams and the deck underneath.

🛏Armchairs, recliners & sofa beds

Priced as a seat, no mechanism surcharge. Recliners open out so the footrest and cavity get done — a favourite hiding place for hair.

🍽Dining chairs

Fabric seats and upholstered backs. A set of six is quick and very visible.

Check the fabric code before anyone puts water on it. Look for a W, S, WS or X tag under a cushion or on the frame. S means solvent only — water on an S-coded fabric can leave a permanent ring even after it dries. We read the code first, and test a hidden section if the tag is missing.

Curtains and mattresses, same visit

Hair and dander do not stop at the couch. Curtains hold both, and we clean them in place on the rod — sheers, blockouts, lined drapes, Roman blinds and the pelmet — so there is no ladder work and nothing to rehang. Mattresses get a dry pass, steam clean and anti-dust-mite treatment, extracted dry enough to sleep on that night.

Do not put lined or blockout curtains in the washing machine. The lining and the face fabric shrink at different rates, so the panel comes out puckered and hanging short, and it never sits straight again. On blockouts the drum also cracks the coated backing, which then flakes and lets light through in pinholes.

Hallam upholstery cleaning — FAQs

Why will not my vacuum get the pet hair off the couch?

Three reasons. Animal hair has overlapping scales along the shaft, so once it works between the threads of a woven fabric it behaves like a barb and will not slide back out. Static from the vacuum head holds fine hair against the fabric, which is why it jumps back the moment you lift the nozzle. And unlike carpet, a cushion is sealed fabric over dense foam, so suction cannot pull air through the material – it only works across the surface.

What is the trick for getting hair off upholstery at home?

Put on a clean rubber washing-up glove, dampen it slightly and drag it across the cushion in one direction. The rubber grips the scales on the hair and rolls it into a clump you can lift straight off. It outperforms most vacuum attachments on fabric, costs nothing and takes about a minute per seat.

Do you remove the hair before cleaning?

Always, and it is the step that matters most. Wet hair mats and binds into the fabric, so any hair still in the weave when moisture is applied becomes far harder to remove and can stay there permanently. We do a full dry removal first, including the seams, piping and the deck under the cushions where most of it collects.

Can you get the dog smell out of a sofa?

Usually yes. Dog odour is body oil transferred into the fabric over months, and it lives in the material rather than the air – which is why airing the room clears it for an hour and then it returns. It needs cleaning through the fabric rather than over it, which is what extraction does.

What about pet urine?

Tell us where it happened, because it is a genuinely different job. Urine that has soaked into the foam needs treatment right through the cushion rather than a surface clean, and occasionally the honest answer is that the insert is beyond saving. We would rather assess that up front than have you pay for a clean that does not fix it.

How much does couch cleaning cost in Hallam?

From $40 a seat, quoted upfront. Count the seat cushions rather than the pieces. There is no surcharge for pet homes, recliners or sofa beds – just tell us so we allow the time.

Is dander different from hair?

Yes, and it is the one most people actually react to. Dander is shed skin, far finer than hair, and it settles deep into fabric and foam where nothing disturbs it. A couch can look spotless and still set off a visitor’s allergies, which is why cleaning through the fabric matters rather than just clearing the surface.
