Before and after professional rug cleaning Melbourne — South Clean

Rug Cleaning

Expert Rug Cleaning for Every Rug Type

Rugs are one of the most used and most valuable soft furnishings in your home — yet they’re also one of the easiest to damage with the wrong cleaning method. Different rug types require different treatment. A wool rug needs a very different approach to a synthetic rug or a hand-knotted Persian rug, and using the wrong chemicals or too much moisture can cause permanent damage including shrinkage, colour bleeding and fibre distortion.

At South Clean, our fully insured and certified technicians are trained to identify your rug type and apply the correct professional cleaning method for the best possible result. We use eco-friendly, pH-balanced cleaning solutions that are safe for all rug fibres, your family and your pets.

Whether it’s a small bedside rug, a large living room rug or a valuable hand-woven heirloom, South Clean treats every rug with the care and attention it deserves.

We service homes and businesses across Greater Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula, 7 days a week including weekends and public holidays. Same-day bookings available.

➕ Add-On: Deodorising & Sanitising

$20 per rug

Add our professional Deodorising & Sanitising treatment to any rug clean for a deeper level of hygiene and freshness.

What it does:

  • Applies a professional-grade anti-bacterial and anti-microbial treatment deep into the rug fibres
  • Kills bacteria, dust mites, mould spores and allergens embedded in the rug
  • Neutralises pet odours, mustiness, food smells and general stale odours at the source — not just masking them with fragrance
  • Leaves your rug smelling genuinely fresh and hygienically clean long after the clean

Recommended for: Pet owners, households with young children, allergy and asthma sufferers, rugs in high-traffic areas, and any rug that hasn’t been professionally cleaned in over 12 months.

How Our Rug Cleaning Works

Step 1 — Rug Inspection & Fibre Identification We carefully inspect your rug — identifying the fibre type, construction method, dye stability and any areas of concern such as staining, wear, fraying or colour fading. This step is essential to ensure we use the correct cleaning method and products for your specific rug.

Step 2 — Pre-Treatment A suitable, pH-balanced pre-treatment solution is applied to loosen embedded dirt, break down staining agents and prepare the fibre for deep cleaning — without compromising colour or texture.

Step 3 — Spot & Stain Treatment Individual stains — wine, coffee, pet urine, grease, ink, mud and more — are treated with targeted solutions chosen specifically for the stain type and rug fibre.

Step 4 — Hot Water Extraction Using professional rug cleaning equipment calibrated for your rug type, we perform a controlled hot water extraction clean — flushing and extracting deep-set dirt, allergens, bacteria and residue from within the fibres.

Step 5 — Deodorising & Sanitising (if selected) A professional anti-bacterial treatment and premium deodoriser is applied throughout the rug, killing bacteria and neutralising all odours at a molecular level.

Step 6 — Moisture Extraction & Drying We extract as much moisture as possible before leaving, reducing drying time significantly. We advise on the best drying setup for your rug to prevent any moisture-related issues.

Step 7 — Final Inspection We inspect the finished result with you before we leave to make sure you’re completely satisfied.

Why Your Rug Needs Professional Cleaning

Most people vacuum their rugs regularly — but vacuuming only removes surface-level debris. Here’s what builds up in your rug over time that only professional cleaning can address:

  • Deep-embedded dirt and grit that settles at the base of the fibres and slowly cuts and damages them from the inside
  • Dust mites and allergens — a major trigger for asthma, hay fever and skin conditions, particularly in wool and natural fibre rugs
  • Bacteria and mould spores — especially in rugs in humid rooms, bathrooms, kitchens or homes with pets
  • Pet hair, dander and urine — which soak deep into the rug pile and backing and cannot be removed by vacuuming or DIY sprays
  • Staining — spills that have set into the fibres over time and bonded with the dye structure
  • Body oils and skin cells — transferred from bare feet over time, creating a build-up that dulls colour and attracts more dirt

Regular professional rug cleaning not only improves hygiene — it extends the life of your rug significantly and preserves its colour, texture and value.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the call-out charge and what does it cover? The $120 call-out fee covers our travel to your property and the setup of all professional equipment. Your first rug clean is always included in that call-out fee — so you’re never paying for both separately.

Why does rug cleaning start from $80 when carpet cleaning starts from $40? Rugs require more careful handling than wall-to-wall carpet. Different rug types need different cleaning methods, solutions and drying approaches. The starting price reflects the additional skill, care and time required to clean a rug properly without causing damage.

Can you clean valuable Persian or antique rugs? Yes but we take extra care with high-value and antique rugs. Please let us know when booking that you have a valuable or delicate rug so we can prepare the right treatment plan and ensure the safest possible approach.

Can you remove pet urine from rugs? Yes. We use enzyme-based treatments specifically designed to break down and remove pet urine, staining and odour from rug fibres. We recommend adding the Deodorising & Sanitising add-on for best results. The outcome depends on how long the stain has been present and how deep it has soaked  we’ll always give you an honest assessment before we start.

Will cleaning shrink or damage my rug? Not when done professionally. We identify your rug type before selecting the correct cleaning method and products. Shrinkage and damage typically occur from DIY cleaning or incorrect methods — our trained technicians avoid these risks.

What is the Deodorising & Sanitising add-on? It’s a $20 per rug treatment that applies a professional anti-bacterial solution and premium deodoriser deep into the rug fibres — killing bacteria, dust mites and allergens and neutralising odours at the source. Highly recommended for pet owners and allergy sufferers.

How long until my rug is dry? Drying time depends on the rug type, thickness and pile height. Most rugs dry within 3 to 6 hours with good ventilation. We’ll advise you on the best drying setup before we leave.

How often should I have my rugs professionally cleaned? Most rugs benefit from professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months. High-traffic rugs, pet households and allergy sufferers should clean every 6 to 12 months.

Do you clean rugs on-site or take them away? We clean rugs on-site at your property in most cases. For very heavily soiled, delicate or oversized rugs that require specialist off-site treatment, we’ll advise you at the time of inspection.

Are your technicians insured and certified? Yes. All South Clean technicians are fully insured and certified.
