Your sofa probably isn’t worn out. It’s pilled.
Bobbling makes good furniture look finished years before it actually is — and unlike real wear, it comes off.

South Clean cleans couches, armchairs, dining chairs, curtains and mattresses across Rosanna, Heidelberg, Macleod, Viewbank and Watsonia — established Banyule homes where the furniture is good quality and worth keeping.
Pilling is not wear, and the difference decides whether you replace it
A sofa that has gone bobbly across the seats and arms reads as finished. People run a hand over it, feel the roughness, and start pricing replacements. Often that is the wrong call, because pilling and wear are two entirely different things happening to the same fabric.
Upholstery fabric is spun from fibres of varying length. The long ones are locked into the weave and hold the structure together. The short ones are only held by friction, and every time you sit, slide or brush against the fabric, a few of them work their way to the surface. Once out, they tangle with each other into a little ball — and that ball stays attached because one end is still anchored by a long fibre. That is a pill.
The important part is what has not happened. The weave underneath is intact. The colour is intact. The fabric has not thinned. All that has changed is that loose surplus fibre is now sitting on the surface catching the light and feeling rough. Remove the pills and clean the fabric and the piece often looks close to new, because structurally it more or less is.
Genuine wear is different and it does not reverse: the weave itself thins, you start to see the backing through it, the nap flattens permanently at the contact points, or a seam gives. Those are the signals that a piece is actually finished, and they are the ones worth looking for before you spend money on a replacement.
Which one is your sofa? Four checks
Two minutes, no equipment, and it usually settles the question.
If it lifts away cleanly and the fabric underneath looks normal, that is pilling. If pulling it takes fibre with it or opens the weave, treat the fabric gently and let us look first.
Tilt a cushion toward a window. If you can see the backing through the weave at the contact points, that is thinning — genuine wear, and cleaning will not change it.
Pilling concentrates where friction happens: seat fronts, arm tops, the outer back where it meets a wall. Even bobbling across the whole piece usually means fabric type, not age.
Fabrics with a synthetic component pill more readily than pure natural weaves, because synthetic fibres are strong enough to hold a pill rather than break off. Bobbling on a newer sofa is often just that.
Why cleaning and de-pilling belong in the same visit
They work on each other. Pills trap soil — they sit proud of the surface, so they collect dust and skin oil faster than the flat fabric around them, which is why a bobbled area also looks dirtier. And loose surface fibre gets in the way of cleaning, because moisture and agitation applied over a layer of pills mats them down into the weave instead of lifting the soil underneath.
So the order matters: pills and loose fibre come off dry first, then the fabric gets cleaned properly. Do it the other way around and you get a damp, matted surface and a mediocre result.
Priced by the seat
$40 a seat. Count seat cushions, not pieces. Cushions cleaned both faces, plus arms, back, seams and the deck underneath.
Priced as a seat, no mechanism surcharge. Recliners open out fully so the footrest cavity and headrest get done.
Mattresses steam cleaned with anti-dust-mite treatment, dry enough to sleep on tonight. Bedheads $70 each, cleaned in place.
Curtains and mattresses, same visit
Rosanna homes tend to have generous windows and mature trees outside them, which means curtains do a lot of quiet work. We clean them in place on the rod — sheers, blockouts, lined drapes, Roman blinds and the pelmet above them — so there is no ladder work and nothing to rehang. Mattresses get a dry pass, a steam clean and an anti-dust-mite treatment, extracted dry enough to sleep on the same night.

Rosanna upholstery cleaning — FAQs
My sofa has gone bobbly. Is it worn out?
Usually not. Pilling and wear are different things. Upholstery fabric contains long fibres locked into the weave and short ones held only by friction; use pushes the short ones to the surface where they tangle into balls that stay attached because one end is still anchored. The weave underneath is intact, the colour is intact and the fabric has not thinned – so removing the pills and cleaning the fabric often gets the piece close to new.
How do I tell pilling from genuine wear?
Pinch a bobble – if it lifts cleanly and the fabric beneath looks normal, that is pilling. Then tilt a cushion toward a window: if you can see the backing through the weave at the contact points, that is thinning, which is real wear and does not reverse. Pilling also concentrates where friction happens, like seat fronts and arm tops, while wear shows as flattened nap or a failing seam.
Can I shave the pills off myself with a razor?
Please do not – it is the most common DIY fix and the one that does real damage. A razor has no depth control, so on a padded surface it cuts anchor fibres along with the pills, and cutting anchor fibres is how a cosmetic problem becomes a thin patch or a hole. Scissors and pulling pills off by hand cause the same trouble, since both drag long fibre out of the weave.
Does professional cleaning cause pilling?
No. Pills form from friction and use, not moisture. What a clean does is reveal them – once the soil dulling the surface is gone, the texture is easier to see. That is why controlled agitation matters: enough to release soil, never so much that it abrades the fabric and raises new loose fibre.
Why does the bobbled area also look dirtier?
Because pills sit proud of the surface, so they collect dust and skin oil faster than the flat fabric around them. Loose surface fibre also gets in the way of cleaning – moisture and agitation applied over a layer of pills mats them into the weave instead of lifting the soil underneath. That is why pills and loose fibre come off dry first, then the fabric is cleaned.
How much does upholstery cleaning cost in Rosanna?
From $40 a seat, quoted upfront – count the seat cushions rather than the pieces. Bedheads are $70 each. There is no premium for fabric type and no surcharge for recliners or sofa beds, and no travel surcharge between Rosanna, Heidelberg, Viewbank, Macleod, Watsonia, Ivanhoe and Bundoora.
Can you do the couch, curtains and mattresses in one visit?
Yes, and it is the cheapest way since it is a single call-out. Curtains are cleaned in place on the rod, including sheers, blockouts, lined drapes, Roman blinds and the pelmet, so nothing is unhooked or rehung. Mattresses are steam cleaned with an anti-dust-mite treatment and extracted dry enough to sleep on that night.
