Renovating? Builders’ dust gets everywhere.
Fine plaster and sanding dust settles deep into carpet and upholstery long after the trades leave. We do the clean that finishes the job.

South Clean cleans carpets, upholstery, rugs, mattresses and curtains across Glen Iris — the interwar and period homes along Malvern Road and Gardiners Creek, many of them mid-renovation or freshly finished.

Why dust keeps appearing weeks after the trades go
Glen Iris has been renovating for years — extensions on interwar homes, second storeys, kitchens opened up. The building work finishes, the builder’s clean happens, and then dust keeps turning up on surfaces for weeks afterwards. People assume the clean was poor. Usually it wasn’t.
Plaster sanding and cutting produce extremely fine particles that stay airborne for hours and then settle into whatever is soft: carpet, curtains, sofas and mattresses. A builder’s clean wipes hard surfaces and vacuums the top of the pile, but a vacuum can’t pull fine dust out of the base of the carpet. It sits there, and every footstep releases a little of it back into the air — which is why the dusting never seems to finish.
The reno reset
Four soft surfaces hold the dust. Doing them together is what actually stops it.
Hot water extraction flushes fine dust out of the backing rather than lifting the surface. Grit from cutting is abrasive, so getting it out also protects the pile.
The largest fabric surface in the house and the most overlooked. Cleaned on the rod, never taken down.
Dust settles into upholstery and bedding and stays there. Both matter if anyone in the house has hayfever or asthma.
And the rest of Glen Iris
Not renovating? Most of what we do here is ordinary and just as welcome — family homes with quality wool or wool-blend carpet in the older houses, which we test and clean at a pH and moisture level wool tolerates, plus traffic lanes, spills, pet stains and the occasional bond clean. Same fixed pricing either way.

Glen Iris carpet cleaning — FAQs
Why does dust keep appearing weeks after my renovation finished?
Because it settled into the soft furnishings. Plaster sanding and cutting produce extremely fine particles that stay airborne for hours, then settle into carpet, curtains, sofas and mattresses. A builder’s clean wipes hard surfaces and vacuums the top of the pile, but a vacuum cannot pull fine dust out of the base of the carpet – so every footstep releases a little back into the air.
When should I book a post-renovation clean?
After the trades have finished for good, not between stages. One clean at the end beats two half-cleans, and if painters or floor sanders are still to come back, everything soft will just collect it again.
Should I do the curtains as well as the carpet?
Yes, if there has been building work. Curtains are the largest fabric surface in most homes and the most overlooked dust reservoir. We clean them on the rod, so they are never taken down and there is no shrinkage or rehanging.
How much does carpet cleaning cost in Glen Iris?
Carpet cleaning starts from $40 per room with a minimum call-out of $120, and booking carpet, curtains and upholstery in one visit costs less than booking them separately. Everything is quoted upfront.
Can you clean wool carpet in an older Glen Iris home?
Yes. We identify the fibre before applying anything and use pH-balanced, wool-safe solutions with controlled moisture, which is what protects wool from shrinkage and browning.
Will removing the dust help with hayfever?
It helps. Fine building dust settles alongside the pollen and dust mite allergen already in carpet and mattresses, and extraction removes a large share of all of it rather than redistributing it the way a vacuum can.
Do you cover Ashburton, Malvern East and Camberwell?
Yes. We cover Camberwell, Ashburton, Malvern East, Hawthorn East, Surrey Hills and Toorak at the same rates – there is no travel surcharge between suburbs.
Just finished renovating in Glen Iris?
Carpet, curtains and upholstery in one visit. Fixed price upfront, dry in hours, seven days a week.
