What a cover actually does
Covering good furniture is sensible instinct, and in a house where the lounge suite has lasted thirty years it has clearly worked. But there is a difference between a cover that gets taken off and washed, and one that has been in place so long it has become part of the sofa.
A washable throw is genuine protection: it takes the skin oil, the spills and the sun instead of the fabric underneath, and every wash removes that load from the house entirely. Fading itself does not come out — that is the dye, not soil — but the dust and the dullness sitting on top of it certainly do, and the difference is usually much bigger than people expect.
