Where the water goes
In a Melbourne winter, drying clothes indoors is completely normal — there is often nowhere else to put them. But the water in those clothes does not disappear. A single washing load holds a couple of litres, and every drop of it evaporates into the air of your house over the next day.
Warm air can hold a lot of moisture; cold air cannot. So that humid indoor air circulates until it meets something cold — a single-glazed window, an uninsulated external wall, the back of a wardrobe against that wall — and at that surface it cools and drops its moisture as condensation. Overnight, when the heating goes off, the whole house cools and the process runs hardest.
Soft furnishings are what absorb it. The bottom of a curtain touching a wet sill, a mattress against an outside wall, the back of a sofa pushed flat against cold plaster: all of them take on moisture, and none of them get airflow to dry out again before the next night. Repeat that for four months and the fabric never fully dries.
That is the musty smell. It is not dirt — it is microbial growth in permanently damp fibre, and it explains why the house smells fine in February and stale by August.
Where to look first
Four places it shows up, in the order people notice them.
Where the fabric meets a wet sill. Look for a tide line, then fine black speckles — that is growth in the fibre, not dirt sitting on it.
The side facing the wall gets no airflow. Pull the bed 10cm off the wall and check the far side and the wall behind it.

What cleaning does, and what it will not
Straight answer, because this is where people get oversold. Cleaning removes the growth and the soil holding it, and it removes the smell — that part works well, and the difference is usually obvious the same day. What it cannot do is undo staining. Where black speckling has been in a fabric for a long time it can leave a permanent mark even after everything living is gone, so some curtains lighten substantially rather than clear completely.

Why does my house smell musty in winter but not summer?
Usually indoor moisture. A single load of washing dried inside puts a couple of litres of water into the air, and showers and cooking add more. Warm air holds moisture, cold air cannot, so that humid air condenses on single-glazed windows and cold external walls. What are the little black speckles on my curtain hem?

Can I just use bleach on it?
Please do not. On fabric it lightens the speckles so the surface looks better while leaving the growth in the fibre underneath, and it weakens the fibres, so a treated curtain often tears along the hem within a season. On coloured fabric it strips the dye permanently. If you have already tried it, tell us – it changes what to expect, not whether we can help.
How do I stop it coming back?
Cut the moisture load. Dry washing in one room with the door shut and a window cracked rather than spread through the house, run the exhaust fan during and after showers and the rangehood during and after cooking, pull furniture 5 to 10cm off external walls so air moves behind it, and open the house up properly for fifteen minutes on a dry day. Cleaning resets it; ventilation keeps it reset.
