Couch, Upholstery & Curtain Cleaning Doveton

📍 Doveton, Hallam & Eumemmerring

Clean a second-hand sofa before it comes through the door.

Not after. Once it is in the lounge, whatever is in the foam is in your house — and a Marketplace bargain is only a bargain if it comes clean.

A used lounge brings its history with it

There is nothing wrong with buying second-hand furniture — a well-made sofa outlasts several cheap ones, and a $200 lounge that cleans up properly is a genuinely good buy. The catch is simply that you cannot see what has soaked in.

Upholstery is fabric stretched over foam, and foam is absorbent. Everything that has ever gone into that couch — skin oils, spilled drinks, pet dander, cooking film, cigarette residue, whatever a previous owner’s dog left in it — is not sitting on the surface where you can inspect it. It is in the foam and the padding, several centimetres down, which is exactly why a used sofa can look presentable in a photo and smell like someone else’s house the moment it warms up in your lounge room.

Odour is the giveaway. A smell that is barely there when the piece is cold and outdoors becomes obvious once the room heats up, because warmth drives the volatile compounds out of the foam and back into the air. If a second-hand couch smells faintly of something on day one, it will smell more, not less, once it settles into a heated living room.

Before you accept it — a five-minute check

Worth doing at the seller’s house, not yours.

😷 Smell the seat, not the room

Press your hand into a cushion hard, then smell your palm. That pushes air out of the foam and tells you far more than sniffing the air nearby.

👀 Lift every cushion

Look at the deck underneath and down the sides. Staining hidden under cushions is the usual reason a piece is cheap.

🏷️ Find the fabric code

A W, S, WS or X tag under a cushion or on the frame. If it says S, the piece needs solvent cleaning — worth knowing before you commit.

🪛 Push on the frame

Sit heavily on each seat and on a front corner. Creaking or movement is frame damage, and that is the one thing cleaning cannot help with.

🐾 Ask about pets

Dander is fine, embedded and long-lasting, and it matters most if anyone in your house reacts to animals. Ask directly rather than guessing.

🔥 Ask if anyone smoked

Smoke residue soaks deep into foam and is the hardest odour to shift. Reducible in most cases, but be realistic and price accordingly.

The best time to book is the day it arrives. Have it put in the garage or on the veranda rather than straight into the lounge, and we will clean it before it goes in. It costs the same either way, but you avoid transferring anything into your carpet and you get a proper before-and-after rather than wondering later.

What cleaning fixes, and what it does not

Straight answers, because a used-furniture decision usually turns on this.

Comes out well

General soil, skin oil, food and drink spills, pet hair and dander, cooking film, and most odour that lives in the fabric rather than the frame.

⚠️Usually reduces

Long-set stains that have oxidised and bonded to the fibre, and deep smoke odour. Real improvement, not always a complete clearance.

Cannot be fixed

A broken or creaking frame, collapsed foam that no longer supports weight, sun-faded fabric, and tears or splits in the covering.

That last card is the useful one. Soil comes out; structure does not come back. If the foam has flattened so the seat sits low and hard, that is fatigue rather than dirt, and no clean changes it — we will tell you that rather than take the booking.

The couch, priced by the seat

On furniture you already own, lift a seat cushion and look underneath. That strip has been shielded from oils, dust and light, so it is the colour the lounge actually is. The gap between that and the rest is soil rather than wear.

🛋Sofas & modulars

$40 a seat. Count seat cushions, not pieces. Cushions cleaned both faces, plus arms, back and frame.

🛏Armchairs, recliners & sofa beds

Priced as a seat, no mechanism surcharge. Recliners open out and sofa beds fold out so the inside gets done — tell us so we allow the time.

🍽Dining chairs

Fabric seats, upholstered backs and the top rail where hands rest. A set of six is quick and very visible.

Check the fabric code before anyone puts water on it. Look for a W, S, WS or X tag under a cushion or on the frame. S means solvent only — water on an S-coded fabric can leave a permanent ring even after it dries, and plenty of ordinary-looking lounges are S-coded. On a second-hand piece the tag is often missing, so we test a hidden section first.

Curtains and mattresses, same visit

The same logic applies to anything else soft that came with the house or was handed down. Curtains we clean in place on the rod — sheers, blockouts, lined drapes, Roman blinds and the pelmet above them — so there is no ladder work and nothing to rehang. Mattresses get a dry pass, a steam clean and an anti-dust-mite treatment, extracted dry enough to sleep on the same night.

Do not put lined or blockout curtains in the washing machine. The lining and the face fabric shrink at different rates, so the panel comes out puckered along the seams and hanging short, and it never sits straight again. On blockouts the drum also cracks the coated backing, which then flakes and lets light through in pinholes.

What’s included

✓ Dry pass first — pet hair and grit lifted out
✓ Fabric code checked, or tested if missing
✓ Odour treatment through the cushions and deck
✓ Cushions cleaned both faces
✓ Curtains and Romans done on the rod
✓ Mattress steam clean with dust-mite treatment
Everything applied has to come back out. Foam holds water, so too much moisture wicks back to the surface as a ring days later. We keep the moisture low during the clean, and before we leave we will tell you which windows and fans will get it dry fastest.

Doveton upholstery cleaning — FAQs

Should I clean a second-hand sofa before bringing it inside?

Yes, and the day it arrives is the ideal time. Have it put in the garage or on the veranda rather than straight into the lounge and we will clean it before it goes in. It costs the same either way, but nothing transfers into your carpet and you get a proper before and after.

Why does a used couch smell worse once it is in my house?

Warmth. The odour is held in the foam rather than on the surface, and heat drives those compounds back out into the air. A piece that barely smells while it is cold and outdoors will smell noticeably more once it settles into a heated living room – so if it smells faintly on day one, expect more rather than less.

How do I check a sofa before I buy it?

Press your hand hard into a cushion and then smell your palm – that pushes air out of the foam and tells you far more than sniffing the room. Lift every cushion and look at the deck and down the sides, since hidden staining is usually why a piece is cheap. Find the W, S, WS or X code. Then sit heavily on each seat and a front corner: creaking means frame damage, which is the one thing cleaning cannot help.

What comes out and what does not?

General soil, skin oils, food and drink spills, pet hair and dander, cooking film and most fabric-held odour clean up well. Long-set oxidised stains and deep smoke odour usually reduce substantially rather than clear completely. A broken frame, collapsed foam, sun-faded fabric and tears cannot be fixed by cleaning – soil comes out, structure does not come back.

Can you get pet smell and hair out of a used lounge?

Hair and dander come out well, starting with a thorough dry pass before any moisture, because wetting hair first just mats it into the fabric. Odour depends on how deep it went – urine that reached the foam is a different job to general dog smell in the fabric, and we will tell you which one it looks like before quoting.

How much does upholstery cleaning cost in Doveton?

From $40 a seat, quoted upfront. Count the seat cushions rather than the pieces. There is no premium for textured fabric and no surcharge for recliners or sofa beds – just tell us so we allow the time.

Is it worth cleaning an old sofa or should I replace it?

If the frame is sound and the foam still supports you, cleaning usually returns far more than people expect for a fraction of replacement cost. If the seat has gone low and hard, that is foam fatigue rather than dirt and no clean changes it. We would rather say that than take the booking.

Just picked up a second-hand lounge?

Book it for the day it arrives. From $40 a seat, quoted upfront, dry in hours.
