Why an old stain is a different problem, not just a worse one
People assume a stain that has been there for years is simply more stubborn — the same substance, dried harder. Usually it is not. It has become something else.
Most household spills are sugars, tannins or proteins: tea, coffee, cordial, fruit juice, wine, milk, tomato. While they are fresh, that material is sitting on the fibre and it is soluble, which is why a fast response with water and a cloth works so well. Left alone, it reacts with oxygen and with light over the following weeks and months. The sugars caramelise and darken, the tannins oxidise, and the residue bonds chemically to the fibre.
At that point it has stopped being soil and started being dye. And that is the whole difference, because a detergent removes soil by lifting it off the fibre — it has no effect at all on something that has become part of the fibre’s colour. Shifting a dye needs a completely different chemistry: an oxidising or reducing agent that breaks the colour apart, applied carefully, because the same chemistry that attacks the stain’s colour can attack the carpet’s colour.
This is also why an old carpet with a dozen marks needs a different approach to a general clean. The general clean and the stain work are two separate jobs done in the same visit.

Milk, egg, blood, vomit, pet accidents. The trap here is heat: hot water can cook protein and set it permanently, so these get treated cool and first, before any steam goes near them.
Cordial, sports drink, some medicines and food colouring. These were dye from the start, so the fibre is genuinely coloured. Sometimes reducible, sometimes not — honest answers only.

The shadow that appears after cleaning
Worth knowing in advance on an older carpet. Sometimes a stain comes out and the spot then looks slightly lighter than everything around it. Nothing has gone wrong — that patch was protected while the rest of the room kept collecting years of soil, so what you are seeing is the carpet’s true colour next to the accumulated tone of the room. Cleaning the whole room, not just the mark, is what evens it out, and it is a good reason not to spot-clean a single patch in isolation.

Can you remove stains that have been there for years?
Often yes, but it is a different job to cleaning. Most spills start as sugars, tannins or proteins sitting on the fibre, where they are soluble. Over months they react with oxygen and light, darken and bond chemically to the fibre – at which point they have stopped being soil and become dye. Detergent lifts soil off a fibre and does nothing to a dye, so these need an oxidising or reducing treatment applied carefully instead.

I already tried a supermarket spot remover. Does that matter?
It can, so please tell us. Bleach-based spot removers can strip the carpet’s own dye and turn a brown mark into a pale one, which is harder to correct than the original. Scrubbing also drives the spill into the base of the pile and abrades the fibre tips, leaving a fuzzy patch that catches light differently even after the colour goes. Blot, never rub.
