Ten years ago most family sofas were a hard-wearing flat weave that tolerated almost anything. The textures people actually buy now — velvet, bouclé, chenille, heavy linen — look far better and behave far more specifically. None of them are fragile, but each fails in its own way if treated like the others.

Knowing which you have decides the method.
The pile has a direction. Moisture and pressure can leave it lying the wrong way, which shows as permanent-looking shading. It isn’t damage — it’s pile direction, and it’s corrected by grooming the nap back one way.
Those loops catch and hold everything, and a snagged loop pulls into a run. Cleaned with suction and controlled moisture rather than anything that drags across the surface.
Natural fibres that mark with water more readily than synthetics, so an uneven wet edge can leave a visible ring. Even application matters more than volume.
Why velvet shading isn’t a stain
It’s the most common panic call we get about modern lounges. Someone dabs a spill on a velvet seat, it dries, and there’s a patch that looks lighter or darker than the fabric around it — often shaped like the cloth they used. That’s almost never a mark in the fibre. It’s the pile lying in a different direction, catching light differently, and it usually grooms straight out. Rubbing at it in the meantime makes it worse.
