In a Deco flat, the rug is the floor
St Kilda’s 1930s apartment blocks mostly have original timber or parquet through the living areas, which means the rug takes everything a carpet would — every trip to the kitchen, every guest, all of it concentrated on a few square metres. Rugs in these flats get dirty far faster than people expect, because there’s no wall-to-wall pile spreading the load.
The awkward part is what to do about it. Sending a rug away means finding a way to transport something heavy and awkward, going without it for a week or two, and paying for the pickup. In a first-floor walk-up with no lift and no off-street parking, that’s a genuine hassle.
So we clean it where it lies
On site, in your flat, and back in use the same day.
Dye-tested in an inconspicuous corner first, because natural dyes in older rugs can bleed if they’re over-wetted.
Protection under and around the rug, moisture kept controlled — original parquet and boards don’t get wet.
Cleaned and dried flat and evenly the same day, so the foundation doesn’t distort and the room stays usable.
Walk-up blocks are not a problem
Most of the older blocks here have no lift, no loading dock and no building manager to ask. Our equipment is portable and carried up, so a second-floor flat with a narrow stairwell is a normal booking rather than a reason to be turned down. A one-bedroom flat is a normal booking too — the $120 minimum call-out covers small jobs.
Sand, grit and bond cleans
Being a block from the beach, fine sand comes in on everything and works down into the pile where it’s abrasive underfoot. Hot water extraction flushes it out from the backing rather than lifting what’s on the surface. And with St Kilda’s share-house turnover, we also do a lot of end-of-lease work — cleaned to agent standard, with a written receipt for the final inspection, and happy to split the bill between housemates.

St Kilda carpet & rug cleaning — FAQs
Do you clean rugs in St Kilda without taking them away?
Yes. Rugs are cleaned on site in your home, so there is no transport, no depot and no fortnight without your rug. We dye-test an inconspicuous corner first, protect the floor underneath, and dry the rug flat and evenly so the foundation does not distort.
Can you clean a vintage or kilim rug safely?
In most cases yes, and the dye test is why we do it first – natural dyes in older and hand-knotted rugs can bleed if they are over-wetted. If a piece is genuinely antique or of significant value we will tell you it belongs with a specialist restorer rather than take the job.
My block has no lift. Can you still come?
Yes. Most of the older St Kilda blocks have no lift, no loading dock and no building manager. Our equipment is portable and carried up, so a second-floor flat with a narrow stairwell is a normal booking.
Is a one-bedroom flat too small a job?
No, it is a normal booking. The minimum call-out of $120 covers smaller jobs, and carpet is from $40 per room with rugs from $80 each. Everything is quoted upfront.
Will you get my original floorboards or parquet wet?
No. We lay protection under and around the rug and keep the moisture controlled, because damp boards cup and lift. It is one of the things we are deliberately careful about in Deco flats.
Can you get beach sand out of the carpet?
Yes, and it is worth doing. Fine sand works down into the pile where it is abrasive underfoot and slowly cuts the fibre. Hot water extraction flushes it out from the backing rather than just lifting what is on the surface.
Do you do end of lease cleaning, and can we split the bill?
Yes to both. We clean to the standard agents expect and provide a written receipt for the final inspection, and we are happy to invoice one housemate and let the others settle separately. Book the carpet last, after the furniture is out.
