Almost every affordable lounge suite sold today is polyester or a polyester blend. It’s durable, colourfast and genuinely good value, and it handles water-based spills better than natural fibres do — juice and tea tend to sit on top rather than soak in.
But polyester has a quirk worth knowing: it repels water and attracts oil. So while it shrugs off the spills people worry about, it quietly draws in the body oils transferring from skin and hair every time someone leans back. Those oils build up on armrests and headrests, and because oil binds to the fibre rather than sitting loose on it, the surface starts to look faintly shiny or darker in exactly those spots — long before the rest of the sofa looks like it needs anything.
Which is why vacuuming and wiping don’t fix it
